Sermon Title—PARTNERING WITH GOD’S PASSIONS
Date: January 15, 2012
Text—John 4:1-42
We are looking at a sandwich ( Some meat that is set between two slices of truth---1. The Condition of The Lost…2. The Co-Laboring Example of Jesus with His Heavenly Father.
V.1-5—He must needs go (Compelled…A Necessity)…There were a couple of things that have to be set straight 1. Soul To be saved 2. Saved Minds to be Renewed 3. Saved to be Sent to Reach Others.
V.6,7—A Well (Springs from Within)….A Weary Savior, focused on ministry when He’s tired (Farmers, Athletes, Soldiers need to do the same)…and a Foreign Woman is valued not only as one who can receive salvation but as one who could serve Him.
V.8—The disciples are more concerned about physical meat than the spiritual meat.
JESUS IS FULL OF GRACE AND TRUTH---HE SHOWS GRACIOUS LOVE THEN HE SHARES TRUTH….MANY DO IT THE OTHER WAY AROUND BUT GRACE LEADS OTHERS TO REPENTANCE.
V.9-12—What confused her?? 1. Race (intermarriages between the Jews and the Assyrians in 722-BC)---JONAH DID NOT WANT TO ASSOCIATE WITH THE ASSYRIANS 2. Gender 3. Service from someone that many called dogs… MANY PRAYED THANK YOU I’M NOT A GENTILE, A SLAVE OR A WOMAN…(Paul taught that in Christ we are one--- Galatians 3:28)
Jesus points out in v.10 that she doesn’t recognize salvation as a gift and who it was that spoke to her…If she knew she would ask Him for living Water—The type of water that has life and causes life in others.
In verse 11 & 12 She shows there’s still a disconnect from the spiritual message just like Nicodemus but she’s drawn in by the Master Teacher. The Question—Are You Greater?? Shows she does not know how great Jesus really is.
V.13-15---JESUS KNOWS SHE’S TIRED OF BACK AND FORTH LOOKING FOR SATISFACTION AT THE WELL BUT ALSO IN SEXUALLY IMMORAL RELATIONSHIPS….HE GIVES HOPE OF NOT THIRSTING AGAIN AND HAS ETERNAL SPRIRITUAL LIFE TO OFFER. THE WATER WILL SPRING UP FROM WITHIN FOR OTHERS (Family,Friends and Aqaintances) TO ENJOY.
The woman asks for the PRESCRIPTION before realizing her DIAGNOSIS……
V.16--24so Jesus points to her problem and His full knowledge of it. The woman realizes the diagnosis and the prescription all within one conversation….She can tell He’s not a regular guy and RECONGNIZES SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT HIM…She’s uncomfortable and changes the subject.
The focus should not be a place of worship but personal relationship with the heavenly Father, but there's only ONE WAY (THE PROMISE THROUGH THE HEBREWS---ABRAHAM’S SEED)
True Worshippers are being sought by God….(Those who adore God and the things God loves, and those who abhor evil). To worship in Spirit and in truth is to have his Holy Spirit and worship God with a heart of devotion and appreciation, instead of idols.
V.25--26--She was aware that a Messiah was to come because Samaritans believed the first five books of the Old Testament which have Messianic prophesies. Jesus introduces Himself as the One she’s been waiting for.
V.27—His disciples Marveled (Were Amazed)that he was talking with that "bleep bleep" he went too far this time… He’s a friend of drunkards, hoars and bleep bleeps. No one had the guts to question Jesus about his interaction.
V.28,30---She begins to do the work of an evangelist….That’s what we should do and if you have the gift you need to train others (building up of the saints)…She could not keep it too herself. SHE WAS SO EXCITED THAT SHE LEFT HER WATER POT AND WAS PLANNING TO RETURN….I WOULD IMAGINE SHE SHARED SOMETHING LIKE THIS "THE SAVIOR KNOWS DETAILS ABOUT ME AND STILL ASSOCIATED WITH ME…HE’S FULL OF GRACE AND TRUTH….NOT CONDEMNING…I’M ALREADY CONDEMNED…HE WANTS TO SATISFY AND SAVE NOT JUST THE HEBREWS. COME SEE FOR YOURSELF IN CASE YOU DON’T TRUST WHAT A WOMAN LIKE ME HAS TO SAY."
V.30 They witnessed evidence of a changed woman and it was refreshing…they were curious to see for themselves
V.31,32—The disciples are still focused on the physical desires and Jesus informs them that they don’t know what He’s delighting in….ASK YOURSELF…DO I KNOW HOW TO DELIGHT IN SPIRITUAL THINGS MORE THAN THE PHYSICAL????
V.33,34---Missing the spiritual message and giving evidence of the lack of knowledge regarding God’s passions they think that someone else got Him a burger. Jesus shares with them what gives him the most fulfillment is to do what His Father sent him to do..We all need to carry out the mandate of our calling. Until then we won't be satisfied.
v.35-38--If we look around we will see people ready to accept Christ..He will lead us to them and lead them to us but we need to be looking. They are ready for reaping and the opportunity is now before it's too late. One sows and another reaps...Recently I led a man to Christ and as I was sharing he said.."The Taxi driver shared that same verse with me last month on our way to Dove DE"...I was just watering a seed that was sown a month prior in a Taxi Cab... Thank God for that faithful messanger of God... Some are so ready and Jesus made it clear that we will reap at times where we did not sowing. All praise goes to God because of the power of God's word and Holy Spirit drawing them.
v.39-41--Many believed because of the Samariton woman's story..When was the last time you shared with someone regarding what you were like before you met Christ...how you met Christ...and how He has impacted you life?? A whole community can be affected if you start sharing and others share after they meet Jesus. They won't believe only because of your testimony..your story will make them want to have an encounter with Christ for themselves and then they will become a true worshipper. By they way, I believe that since Jesus spent a lot of time in prayer (Luke 5:16), His intercession contributed to the preparation of their hearts as well.
